Radium Girls (English version below)

Spesso, verso il volgere della giornata, penso alle Radium Girls.

Quando al calar del sole le lancette del mio orologio iniziano ad emettere una bella luminescenza verde, torno indietro nel tempo, all’ America degli anni ’30:

…..Ottawa, Illinois, i dipendenti della Radium Dial Company si recano come tutti i giorni in fabbrica per svolgere il proprio lavoro.

La maggior parte degli operai  sono ragazze giovani, attratte dal salario abbastanza elevato di 18 dollari la settimana… queste sono le Radium Girls, facili da riconoscere, perchè sempre ben vestite e con belle automobili.

Il loro lavoro consiste nel  dipingere  con una miscela di mesotorio, solfato di rame e solfuro di zinco, i quadranti degli orologi, in modo che questi al buio possano produrre una luminosità  verde brillante, ed addirittura alcune prendono a dipingersi con la vernice,  varie parti del corpo, per sorprendere di sera i loro amici.

Dopo qualche tempo, alcune di loro inziano a lamentare dolori alla mascella. Nessuno sembra dare il giusto peso a questi sintomi, fin quando una di loro muore all’ età di 25 anni.

Subito partono le indagini e ben presto, le autorità concentrano l’ attenzione sulla tecnica, che le ragazze avevano adottato per dipingere i piccoli numeri sui quadranti: dopo ogni pennellata, si leccava la punta del pennello per renderlo più appuntito.

Cosi le ragazze, ogni volta, introducono un pò di mesotorio, che come il calcio va a depositarsi nelle ossa, liberando particelle α, che non solo distruggono l’ osso ma alterano anche le cellule del midollo. In poco tempo diventano anemiche, si ammalano di leucemia, e le loro mascelle diventano fragili come gesso.

Da qui partono tutte le riforme per rendere il lavoro più sicuro…..

Gli ultimi orologi dipinti con una vernice a base di radio furono prodotti nel 1968, e subito dopo vi fu la demolizione dell’ impianto della Radium Dial Company.

Ora avete capito perchè verso sera penso alle Radium Girl.

Often, towards the end of the day, I think of the Radium Girls.

When the sunset the hands of my clock began to emit a beautiful green light, I return back in time, all ‘America of the 30s:

… .. Ottawa, Illinois, employees of the Radium Dial Company go as every day at the factory to carry out their work.

Most of the workers are young girls, attracted by relatively high wages of $ 18 a week … these are the Radium Girls, they are easy to recognize, as they are always well dressed and  have beautiful cars.

Their job is to paint with a mixture of mesotorio, copper sulphate and zinc sulphide, the dials of watches, so that those in the dark tend to produce a bright green light, and even to take some paint with the paint, several parties of the body at night to surprise their friends.

After some time, some of them start complaining of pain in the jaw. Nobody seems to give proper weight to these symptoms, until one of them dies in age of 25 years.
